Task 1 - Be able to extract information from written sources

When creating an advertisement, there needs to be some research that is done using external sources. These sources then require us to extract information that is relevant to the advertisement production.

These are examples of websites which i used to extract information.

BANK – Fashion:

The bank fashion website has a large portion of the website page taken up by a board that has images of the existing products. The colours that are used to advertise these products are bright and fun which will automatically attract people from the ages of 16-23, because at this age people are really into fashion and things that look good. The website itself I think really appeals to people of that age because the website has cool magazine style pages and also has many images of the fashionable products like their onesises. This will be good research for our actual production because our brand, #JustWear, is all about attitude and having something to wear quickly but still be stylish, like the onesises on the Bank fashion website.

CHAMELEON – Fashion:
Chameleon is also a good website because it is appealing to people of the ages that have been specified. As this is a menswear brand it is appealing to men because it looks good and it is more appealing to men at the age of their 20’s as they have sensible clothing like t shirts, but also have clothing that is a bit wild and appealing to some people that like things like bands and other specific things. The website itself also is similar to the Bank fashion website in the way that the website has a middle section at which there is a moving image that takes up the width of the website, and the images change to show the different clothing types, like t-shirts, shorts and other different clothing types.

Here is an example of adverts in magazines:

These adverts usually include images that take up the whole page of a magazine. They do not have much writing but include an image which would make the people flicking through the magazine look at it as it would be eye catching. This is shown in the advertisement above.

Here is an advertisement from a newspaper.

This shows that the newspaper advertises things on one or two of the pages of the newspaper. All kinds of people are able to use the newspaper to advertise their company or product. The advertisements are usually all squashed together as shown above which means that it is harder to see them.

Skim reading

Skim reading is a process of speed reading that involves a person reading through the sentences of a document to look for clues about what the document is about. Some people can naturally do this while some have to practice this. It is more likely that adults do this compared to children. Another form of skim reading is the person skipping through bits of information that is not interesting to them or is not relevant to them. This is most commonly used my internet users.
One advantage of skim reading is that it saves a person who reads it, time which means that this is a very good and effective study method as it saves a student time when reading their study books. This is also a useful method to students when they have an exam where they have to read a long extract of writing in a very short amount of time. This is also a skill which can be very useful during the day to day life of a person as it saves them time when reading things such as letters.
However a disadvantage of this could be that when skim reading, the person may miss out important details which then result in important information getting missed. Also sometimes the person may have to re read the passage so they are able to take it in and understand it properly.
